The Foundation organized an information day on university studies in Tunisia and abroad , in collaboration with Worldwide Studies, AIESEC, and the Regional Education Commission of Gabès. This day took place on June 04th, 2022 at the “Gabès University Cultural Center” and targeted future graduates as well as students looking to continue their studies or their internships abroad. Here is a brief summary of the main interventions that have been presented to the public present:
The choice to study in Gabès
Presented by Mr. Abdrezzak JEDAY, President of CENSEG (Association of NSEG former).
For Mr. Jeday, attractiveness is not a final achievement. It is built and maintains itself by a multiplicity of extremely varied factors, such as the excellence of research, the improvement of the living environment, the reputation of training, the local employment potential for young graduates, or even the general image of the university city, conveyed in particular from urban innovations or scientific, sporting ,or cultural events. As a result, the University of Gabès has several assets that also strengthen its attractiveness to baccalaureate holders and future students. Here are some elements:
- A range of future specialties that cover several types of training covering all the areas of knowledge: fundamental sciences and technology, engineering sciences, legal sciences, computer sciences, languages, the humanities, arts and trades, nursing sciences, preparatory studies, etc.
- 12 establishments in Gabès with 12,288 students, 71% of whom are girls, and 84 foreign students.
- 21 laboratories and research units; 364 doctoral students; and 56 research and professional masters.
- A multitude of scientific, technological, cultural, and sporting events
- Large industrial and economic companies: which constitute an environment favourable for internships, ESPs, and research work.
- Future specialties: such as process, computing, multimedia, telecoms, nursing sciences...
- An important network of university and socio-economic and foreign partners (60 conventions signed with the university and higher establishments)….
- An average success rate (excluding terminal years) of 70%.
- Safety and quality of life that exist in the city of Gabès and its surroundings.
- A very rich cultural landscape: international festivals, museums, specific cultural days for students, etc.
Baccalaureate and university studies
Presented by Mrs. Samia Attia: principal advisor of information and academic and university orientation at the Regional Education Commission of Gabès.
Mrs. Attia presented a whole range of advice that affects the preparation of different subjects as well as psychological, mental, and physical preparation
- Good organization and planning of revisions: a baccalaureate holder needs to prepare an optimized and effective schedule, which must also adapt to his needs. Indeed, it is necessary to prioritize the materials with high coefficients and those in which the student has the most difficulty working, especially French and English. This will allow him to ensure better assimilation and time management.
- It is also preferable to make summaries to help you at the end of the year to revise better.
- However, a schedule must also be airy, so it is essential to have break times to avoid overheating and to block and find a slot between outings, leisure, and extracurricular activities.
- Having a good lifestyle: it is necessary to well adopt a good lifestyle, to go early to bed, and to eat healthily. A healthy lifestyle helps to revise effectively. Sport helps to refresh your head; it is a release that relieves work stress.
- Train more: to learn and retain lessons in the Baccalaureate, it is essential to repeat to memorize, students can also use the technique of the sheets to facilitate revision and understanding. The repetition of exercises and exams from previous years can be very useful insofar as they ensure the speed of problem solving. We must not stop at this stage; indeed, you have to predict the subjects that can fail the test.
– Good revision conditions: To revise longer, you need to have an atmosphere and a motivating environment. Therefore, if you want to work while listening to music or vice versa in silence, you have to choose the place that perfectly meets your needs and the one that best suits your personality. It is also advisable to work in a group because it promotes the exchange of ideas and enriches knowledge, however, if you are used to studying alone to better concentrate, do not change your mode of study.
– Getting to know yourself and targeting your strengths and weaknesses: Getting to know yourself better allows you to put in place learning strategies. It is therefore very important to discover your profile and your perceptual type. If a candidate is a visual type, he will learn faster by reading his lessons or doing flashcards. If he is auditory, he will retain more by listening to a teacher or reciting his lessons aloud.
– Forge a winning mentality: It is also necessary to cultivate positive attitudes: practice optimism; repeat positive phrases that value us daily; surround yourself with positive people who push us upward or who can serve as an example. One of the fundamental keys to preparation is positive visualization: this consists of visualizing a scene mentally in the most positive way possible and always succeeds.
– Have a healthy lifestyle: it is essential to avoid nervous fatigue. You should have a good diet, drink enough, get a good night's sleep, have physical activities, and preserve daily moments of relaxation, which you will have to multiply before D-Day. On the day before the tests, you have to try to practice activities that allow you to relax, such as breathing, relaxation, laughter, etc. Mrs. Attia who reviewed the most attractive courses in Tunisian universities, their specificities, and the scores needed to apply for them, has also provided extensive advice on the choice of these different specialties and the establishments to which graduates apply. Finally, she answered the many questions that were asked to her.
Opportunities for studying abroad
Presented by Mrs. Mayssa Khomsy, Founder and General Director of Worldwide Sudies.
Ms. Khomsy spoke about the different opportunities for studies in European universities while detailing the specificities of each of them, the costs of registration and studies relating to them, and the conditions of access to these universities. This is how new destinations have become more attractive given the costs of registration and accommodation for Tunisian students: British, Belgian, Swiss, Maltese ,or even Turkish universities are among these new destinations, which are less known and less solicited by young Tunisian holders of baccalaureate and who, however, are relatively more “adapted” to the financial means of the Tunisian family. Mrs. Khomsy also insisted on the many procedures characterized by great rigor and precision in the processing of admission files and which are subject to several criteria, including among the most important: language level tests, which can be cited, among others, the various French language tests (DFLS/ DAFLS / FKT/ ...), those of the English language (TOEFL / IELTS / SAT ...), the German language tests such as "TestDaf"; in addition to other types of tests relating to the level of the candidates, their competence, their personalities, etc.
The speaker also insisted on certain mistakes frequently made by candidates and answered the many questions relating to tuition fees, the granting of scholarships, and accommodation procedures.
Let us remember, finally, that it is the third time that the Hédi Bouchamaoui Foundation is organizing an event on the theme of the most attractive sectors both in Tunisia and abroad, following multiple requests from young people from different secondary schools.
