Hédi Ben Ahmed Bouchamaoui was born on January 20, in the village of Bouchamma, located at the northern entrance to the city of Gabès, which was, at that time, a simple community; most of its inhabitants lived on agriculture and handicrafts. He grew up in a conservative family, attached to traditions and family values, composed of three brothers and two sisters along with the parents. The father, Ahmed, worked in stone, gravel, and sand quarries. The father died in 1942, leaving his children orphans at a time when they were minors, inexperienced, and had no resources. The eldest son, Hédi, found himself at the age of 11 forced to take up the torch and take on his responsibilities at such a young age, in order to preserve and protect the family.
